Italics and their quirks - Answered

Hello--
When I click on a style choice, like italics, the [ i ] signifier does not appear where my cursor is. It shows up at the bottom of my page.

This is OK if I'm writing a no-quote reply--I just backspace it up into place. But if I've got a full text that I'm quoting from, the end of the document may be a long scroll away. I have to scroll all the way to the end of the text, highlight the symbol, cut it, scroll up, and paste it. Then I have to do the same thing for the [/i] signifier.

So--any way to make the signifiers appear in the same place in the text where the cursor is?

Anita -

The same thing happens to me all the time and, yes, it's frustrating. What I try to do is this:

Type my text where I want it - maybe I'm inserting text in the middle of my post - then block that portion of text I wish to put in italics, and while the text is highlighted, click on the italics button. The highlighted text is now in italics. The same can be done with bold, underlined, a different color, etc.

I hope this helps!

Thanks, Silverlady, that works just fine. When I first started coming here, I couldn't cut and paste in these reply boxes, nor could I make any changes if I highlighted--the text would just sit there.

Now I can do these things (Why? How? Who knows?!) So that trick works just fine.

Or you could just type them in, like you did (without the spaces of course)in your first post Anita. I find typing them in is just as fast.

Hi Donna--
Gee, my business partner and I are always trying to keep each other from falling into rigid thinking, but I see that the lesson hasn't quite "taken" yet. Yes, typing them in would be faster than what I was doing before, and I did have experience with typing in "quote" symbols. It is always surprising to be shown how A and B can lead to C, while I'm totally overlooking it and moving ahead to D.

Silverlady's suggestion is a good one, and I hope that it also works to highlight text for quoting. I am still delighted that now, suddenly, I can cut and paste, and that highlighting actually DOES something. These forum boxes were totally unresponsive to any of these operations when I began posting here, and after trying many ways to do it, I stopped bothering.
