Heartbreak: Allergic to Silver :(

Post by Lorna »

A couple of weeks back I purchased a beautiful sterling silver necklace. Well, the last couple of times I have worn it I have developed a nasty rash along my neckline. So, back to the store my lovely chain must go. :(

Does anyone else here have an allergic reaction to certain types of jewelry? I know I can wear gold without any problem, but I don't like gold jewelry. Perhaps white gold..... :-k

I'm open to any comments or suggestions.

I'm so glad to see you back Lorna. I missed you.

I'm sure you are aware that most jewelery is a combination of metals and even though it said sterling silver it may not be.

In addition to that, isn't "white gold" an oxymoron? I have often wondered about that but I understand if those that have to wear gold would go for white gold.

hugs, Paige

Lorna,

Many jewelry stores or other stores that sell Silver jewelry use chemicals such as Tarn-X to remove tarnish from silver items that are difficult to clean. I am a silver person, so I own Tarn-X and it works great, however it is a corrosive. Perhaps the store cleaned it in such a substance but failed to clean it with soap and water to remove the chemicals.

I know that silver tarnishes really quickly as I own a lot of sivler. Anyway, you might try washing it in soap and water and see if you have any reaction to it. I have never heard of a silver alergy. Good luck.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Thanks, girls!

Well I did some research on the web & it turns out that there are traces of nickel in my chain! Not good. [-X

It turns out that white gold would not be a good idea either, as white gold can also sometimes contain nickel. I guess I can only wear jewelry that is 100% nickel-safe. My wrist had a similar reaction to a watch several years back.

Dressing over 7 years & I'm still learning! Tomorrow at work I shall exchange the chain for one that's nickel safe.
