Does anyone else have difficulty applying mascara? My eyelashes are fairly long and I don't know if that is the problem or if I am applying too much mascara, but after the application, when I blink, I leave eyelash lines below my eyes and it's difficult to fix. Any suggestions?

Don't blink.

It takes time for the mascara to dry. So don't blink. Don't put too much on either, not that it's that controllable. One coat, let dry, second coat.

Make sure you've applied foundation before putting on mascara. It makes cleanup easier. Use a pad made for eye makeup removal to clean the lash marks, then touch up the foundation.

Like Donna said, apply your foundation first - even on your eyelids - as it does make it so much easier to remove any 'blinked' or 'smudged' mascara. Be careful not to get the foundation into your eyes - it burns like crazy - but even if you're going to wear eyeshadow, having the foundation on the eyelids helps 'even out' your skin tone.

I've always just used a kleenex or the like (read: piece of tp as it's always closer!) and have never had a problem removing the 'blinked' or 'smudged' mascara from my eyelids. Just don't wipe too hard - the eyelids are extremely sensitive!!

What I do and I know it is wasteful but I wipe off the brush with a tissue before i apply... and put on 3 or 4 thin coats rather than one big thick goopy coat. Keeps the lashes from sticking together also.. and I'm very careful when I put it on so as to not touch my face.... I kind of hold the wand in place and slowely close my eye. Seems to work for me..

Have you experimented with different types of mascaras and mascara wands? I have fairly long thick eyelashes and the one that works best for me is the "comb" type - Maybelline Lash Stylist I think it's called. Also - there are clear coat mascaras if you just need something to "set" them after curling but don't need the lengthening or thickening of regular mascara.

As others have pointed out, mascara needs to dry and if you blink in the meantime, you'll get smudges. Q-tips and tp are a girl's best friend for touchups.

I find it easier to do my eyes first, remove any smudges if necessary and THEN put on foundation, blush, etc. Yes, even after YEARS of daily practice, I still get occasional smudges too.

I too have found that Q-tips are a necessity. I have also found that using eye make-up remover with the Q-tip helps with the control of smudges. In lieu of that baby oil will work also. I have had success with L'oreal Volume Shocking - it is a two part application and really gives me the length and separation and if I use the curler after each application, it seems to help prevent smudges, but I keep the Q-tips and eye make-up remover handy!
