As some know I bought a cheap wig vie only wore it twice but would like a better one. That won't break the bank any ideas ?

Visit several wig shops and try on different styles. Maybe you'll luck out and find a sale. Or maybe you'll find a style online similar to the one you liked, for a cheaper price.

First learn what wigs are -- how they are made, the types of hairs, materials, styles and fits. Learn a bit about their care and feeding. There are gobs and gobs of you tubes, web sites, blogs etc. Just look. Once you have an idea about what a decent (not expensive and not perfect) wig should be and how to take care of it, then, as Donna said, go try some on and ask lots of questions. It's a must to try on wigs; you can't look at a picture of someone else's face and know that that wig is right for you. Trying on a few wigs at a wig shop does not obligate you to buy one there. If they ask that you buy a cap, you're going to want one anyway. Some wig shops limit how many wigs you can try on a visit; thems the rules so find a few shops. You want more than one opinion anyway. And nnoooooooooo other customers could care less.

Shopping for a Wig online... is harder to do but not impossible. I bought my first wig online and it worked out just fine. In fact, I think it was from Wigs.com. Anyway couple of tips.

1) Figure out what style you want... try googling "hairstyle for face shape" and check out some of the links. This is a good one cause it has how to instructions -> http://www.lifescript.com/well-being/ar ... shape.aspx

2) Measure your cap size... This is important for fit and comfort. The wigs.com site has instructions. Larger cap sizes are very limited but don't despair... there are plenty of videos and other instructions for how to modify wig caps. I can't say that I have personally tried this but I know other girls that have had good success.

3) You are probably going to go for a synthetic hair wig to stay in budget and I'm guessing you know what color you want so start shopping.

I still have my first synthetic wig from wigs.com and while it needs some tender loving care, it's still in pretty good shape.

I think that most online wig shops will accept returns. If the style you choose doesn't fit or just does not work for you, then you could probably do an exchange - unless the style is discontinued. So be sure to check the shop's return policy!

Not only are longer wigs harder to take care of, they make the wearer's face look 'older' and more haggard-looking as they increase in age.

Long hair is for the young(er) person; once someone hits their 40s they need to start looking at shorter hair styles to maintain that 'younger' image.

One way to test that theory, if you will, is to get dressed in a particular outfit, then change wig styles from longer hair to shorter; you'll see what I mean.


Trust me, it's a battle continuously fought with someone I love . . . and she's just now slowly starting to believe me.

Another thing that can change with age is just how much colour you want in your wig. I used to have a long haired black wig, which I really loved. I got rid of it in a purge. When I came back to CDing I found I needed a medium length darkish brown wig with some red in it. Just recently this has started to make me look old and I've gone to a slightly longer wig with some blonde highlights to add to the darkish brown and red.

The last two wigs I've got in shops. The last one, in particular, has involved taking on board what the SAs had to say. I understand that Kelly Marie has some really bad experiences in there - and I live in a place where really wig shopping is no problem at all (London, UK) - but, honestly, you miss an awful lot if you don't do it in person.

Me too, SL! Rapidly approaching 60, we're wearing our hair just off the shoulder.
My girlfriend needs hair long enough to hide a thicker neck and hair back there.


Antony is quite right. Unless you're a young lady, a solid color won't look natural. A real head of hair has some variance of color. Hubby's fav is ash brown with some grey.

Before buying a wig, Kelly Marie, learn how to take care of it. It'll last longer, but not forever. So write down the style and color for future reference.

I do not have much to add here...suppose if I did not have hair...bald spot or something wigs would be important. I am lucky that I can grow my own and just dye it occasionally to restore the medium brown it has always been...but touch of grey is coming.

I did purchase one wig and with care it has lasted for years with wig conditioner and shampoo on occasion after wearing it about 10 times or so...Unless you sweat alot. Get a wig stand. I store mine by covering it on the stand with shopping bags to keep any dust from settling on it and in a box, it still looks great after 11 years. Paid $45 for it and the lady who helped me pick it out...she knew what would look good so I went with her recommendations just a shoulder length and she sat me down and styled it another important thing to have done by someone who knows how to do that. I was always very careful just to very lightly brush or comb it so as not to pull the hairs out..a light touch. Then some wig spray on occasion. Stay away from open oven doors which could melt the strands.

I was always satisfied with it because it with make up and ear rings the transformation was always wonderful and amazing.

Now I just brush out my own hair and style it and I get the same results. I am amazed by the family resemblance to my sister and mother...not sure why it amazes me perhaps because I am seeing what I would have looked like had I been lucky enough to have been born a girl. I wasn't I just have a gender variation and that is fine with me.

The thing about wigs is the many different colors and lengths and styles which instantly transform your look that's cool.

I got a wig from Amazon very inexpensively. It came from China and I was very pleased with it. It's short and colour is a light ash blond as befits a lady in here fifties like myself. I agree with Eileen that short is best at my age but I would like a longer going out to parties wig. Although my next wig will probably be medium length.

I've also considered getting a human hair wig such as I've seen on sites like Alibaba. Has anyone any experience?

Human hair wigs are very expensive and wear out the same. Unless your income depends on a great looking wig, it's hard to justify the cost.

It must be nice to change hair length and color for an event.

I've paid more for synthetic wigs than some of the prices online. But you're probably right.

As for changing hair for an event. African women living here do that all the time. Shops that cater for them always seem to have a selection of wigs. Seems to be part of their culture. A great idea in my opinion.
