Again, my friends, thanks for the love and concern, I swear I can feel it as I read and reread your caring statements. The Dr's (several and I can't keep up with all of them) as a group at the hospital where my wife is in ICU, they have recommended that she be transferred to the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Things are being recommended like "spinal tap" and "brain biopsy" and they say they just are not comfortable with doing those procedures where she is and that UVA has even more up to date, modern equipment as you would expect at a "teaching medical school." They have told us that they really have not seen a case like this in that such a large portion of the right frontal lobe is,(dare I say) infected and it trails over the the left side to some degree and there "appears" to be no trace of a tumor to support the swelling! They will be transferring her Monday or Tuesday and after that it is anyone's guess what will happen. It is about a two hour drive from here to Charlottesville so I don't know about access to a 'puter right now. Worse case senario, I will miss you girls more than you will know! Keep the faith and smile!
Love,
Virginia

Hi Virginia,

It sounds to me like your wife will be getting top notch medical care. When my mother was having her difficulties a couple of years ago, she was at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the teaching hospital for Dartmouth College. If UVA is anything like DHMC then your wife will be in the very best of hands.

But, since DHMC is over 80 miles from here, I know what that long drive can be like. So, please take care of yourself as well.

My thoughts are with you.

One more update! Today, Sunday at 1:00 my wife was put in an ambulance and transferred to University of Virginia Medical!! It appears that the first thing they did was toss out the MRI she had had done here in Roanoke. It did not include what is called "contrast dye." What I was told that not only does she have an inordinately large area of swelling but that it is not supported by a tumor is "amazing." Not that it is not possible, but the "plain" MRI done here would pick up most tumors, but the dye will definitely bring it out IF there is one! God I hope not, but they are doing it tonight so tomorrow we will know that much anyway.
Thanks again my sisters for your love and concern.

Well girls, Thursday morning she will get a brain biopsy as all the non-invasive tests are not giving them the information that they feel they need to treat her. She told the nurse that I had plenty of wigs she could borrow, but in her condition they don't know if she is hallucinating or not, so I just smile (and think, I don't know if I want to share my wigs - Just kidding!!!) I don't know how she would look as a blond, since she has been a redhead all her life. Anyway, thanks again for your love and concern and if She, God is willing we will be able to determine what treatment will be needed.
God Bless all of you, my sisters for all you do!

Again a brief update. The latest is that she has a disease called "Demyelinating disease." I went on the web to research it and I guess the best way to describe it is "she has a car!" Now the Dr's don't know if it is a Ford or Chevy or Dodge. the color, V-8 or 6 etc. The medical studies say it can be terminal or can be treated with antibotics and it will quickly go away! It can be linked to MS and some other nerve damaging problems, but in some cases easily treated. Right now, bottom line is medical science just does not know what it is only that it "probably" came from a virus and can mutate into any of dozens of problems some easily treated and some not!
Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for your concern, I will post when I can and I can say no girl has ever had sisters that support her like my sisters here do----Love you all!!!!!!

Virginia saves my sanity

Post by Virginia »

WEll girls it has been and continues to be quite a roller coaster ride! I have been making the four hour R//T almost every day between Roanoke and Charlottesville. Today UVa was going to discharge her and allow me to bring her back here to Roanoke and admit her to the initial hospital where we took her - Somewhere in my sojourn between Roanoke and Charlottesville, BC/BS decided that they would NOT pay for her to be readmitted to the origial hospital - it was not a wasted trip as I got to spend some time with her, but she will remain at UVa until Tuesday or Wednesday, then discharged and allowed to come home with Home Health Care nurses coming by twice a day! She is on heavy anti-virual IV'S and it seems to be working, she is becoming her same cheerful self again - the woman I have not seen in many months!
As for me and Virginia - the girl has definitely saved my sanity! I would get home from the two hour trip at six or seven at night and Virginia would want to get dressed, get back in the Jag and just drive around, which we have done on several evening. Sooo relaxing and soothing!! It was almost (how best to describe it??) a mothering of me. Virginia would seem to take over and say, "honey, you are under a lot of stress, let me make you feel better, just relax and I will do the voodoo that I do so well!!" Dressed in hose, heels, mini and silk blouse and great make-up and off we would go just driving around, listening to Jazz on the radio. she is marvelous - what a woman!!!! It's the gift girls!! It is the gift!!!!
Love you all and if you will indulge me - Virginia I love and cherish you tooo, girl!!
