Wigs, why you wear the ones you do?

Wigs, why you wear the ones you do?

Post by TracyQ »

If you do, of course.

In the last five years, I have taken to wearing very short wigs, mostly because they are easier to take care of, and because, in my work, I have to be outside in all kinds of weather (read: WINDY), and anything longer than 2-3 inches ends up looking like a dead cat in short order!

Plus, I am 57 years old, and long locks just don't look good on me, as they tend to "drag" the face down, something I don't need.

The interesting thing is that I feel more feminine when wearing shorter wigs, this was not always true. Part of it, although not all, is that one of the easiest ways to "read" a crossdresser is that she will be the one with the absolutely gorgeous hair, cascading across her shoulders, and in perfect array.

But, we are all different, and have different needs and ideas, I am interested in yours!

Well. I have quite a collection for various reasons. I have however narrowed my favorites down to about four and like you the short length seems to fit me best. It was also educational to learn the difference between "curly" and "wavy." I can not wear the real short ones because of my "alter-ego's" hair/head structure. I prefer it to be cut/short enough to show my ear rings, (I like ear rings-and no I do not have pierced ears- that is another topic). I prefer the "wavy" as opposed to the curly in blond and straight in the brunette - why? I just like the way I look, whether I want to present as a blond or brunette. This has its up and down sides. For my presentation, Virginia can not intermingle blond clothing and brunette clothing in most cases, so it requires more shopping for two wardrobes =D> . Lipstick and eye shadow has to be expanded as well.
Ain't it great!!!!!! Part of decision as to which color depends on where I am going needless to say, "blonds do have more fun" but they also attract more attention, so any place where I want to maintain a low profile, it is brunette, but for clubbing and nicer restaurants, blond is fine.
I agree, the longer hair does attract more attention as well and we have to learn what styles go with our facial structure, height and weight - most of us don't want to be seen as "a guy in a dress," so study and ask questions. Most of the better internet sites, Paula Young and others have toll free numbers and people who are more than willing to discuss color, style and shape without embarrassing questions and comments, as a lot of their business is from us! In conclusion, it is still the old saying, "you get what you pay for!" So save those bucks and get a nice one. As for human hair - personal choice, but I don't have the experience to do it myself and for me having someone else clean and style it is expensive. The synthetic ones are easy to care for, just read the instructions and use shampoo and conditioner made specifically for them.
Sorry, I think I went too long!
Love,
Virginia

I've two wigs, but rarely wear the long one. I wear the one in Avatar most of the time. I picked this one after my wife took me to the wig shop because she didn't like the long one.

So, I tried on several at the shop and all three of us (inc. the shop keeper)decided it looked the best. It might have been a different story had I worn makeup, and I'm tempted to go again with makeup on just to satisfy my curiosity.

Donna -

I don't know how you would look in other wigs, but you look absolutely wonderful with this hairstyle! Personally, I wouldn't change it, but I can see why anyone would want to try other hairstyles - and for that, I'm a bit jealous! Hmmm, maybe I should ask Virginia if she'll let me try on some of her wigs???? :-k

I really wanted to get a shorter wig. My hairdresser said don't do it, so I got what I thought was a slightly shorter wig than my old Lisa look. I wanted to go from a red head to a blonde, just for a change. I liked it when my hairdresser did it up, but when I tried to do it at home, I didn't like it much and the girls here didn't seem to like it either.

I really, really love my new longer wig.

Since I've always worn wigs and hairpieces when I feel like it Missy had an advantage because she could try on wigs and then decide what she liked. She's excited that in Vegas she's going to a wig shop to try on short wigs and she what she really likes. My hair is very short and I just love it. At 54 I like blow and go hair and like that I can actually change the style of the short hair so I'm never bored. Have fun!!

No wig. My hair is long enough for a pony tail and that's what I always wear, either mode. Can't stand it when it's not in a pony tail-it gets in the way of everything.

Hi S. Lisa,

I agree emphatically - the longer wig suits you MUCH better.

You have a problem that most of us have, i.e., a male-shaped face. The usual male face is more oval, and longer vertically than a GG's. Also there is the larger lower jaw - a symptom of that Y chromosome plus testosterone at an early age.

I am far from being a wig expert, but I have found that length is not as important in a wig as lateral fullness. Your long hair one fills your face out nicely. Consider a look like Martha Stewart, for example. Her hair is medium length, but there is an attractive width. Of course her face shape is more typically round.

You look great, in any case.

Hugs,

Lydia

I have two wigs, the first was bought online (cheap!) and I didn't really like it. After being out in public a few times, I went with a friend to a local wig shop (TG friendly, of course) and tried on several. This is currently the only one I wear. I keep the old one for emergencies, but I'm thinking of getting another good quality one like I have now.

I love long hair. Always have. I didn't really like how I looked in short hair, but maybe as time goes on I'll try again. Long hair is a lot of work!

Hugs,
Kyra

WIGS

Post by Kendra Lynn »

Well I've got a lot-- dark, light, and in between. Long, medium, and long-ish.
Short ones really don't do it for me. I've tried. No "updos" either.
My favorite look is hippie-ish length that's been styled a little. Layers perhaps, or a LITTLE waviness or curl. Those wigs look good with my clothing style, which tends to be "preppy/nice girl." And I like the combination of hippie-ish hair styles with "preppy/nice girl" outfits. that blend really does work.
I have some shoulder length wigs that I like too. (these are great when dressed as a cheerleader, I'm jumping up and down, waving pompons at political events! )
I have wigs that don't get too many outings-- ones that looked ok in the wig shop when I decided to try something different. But after getting home, and trying them on again, they seem more like fashion mistakes. Unfortunately, by that time I'm stuck with 'em.
But it is fun to try different styles and colors.
I can't use my own hair, most of it is gone!!
I do take wigs back to the wig shop to be re-styled. That is not a skill I'm likely to pick up.
And that's my statement on wigs (for now).
Peace-- Kendra Lynn.

i have a wig, its about 12 inches long and blonde, but my hair has actually gotten so long on its own i cant wear it, so i have gotten the hang of using my own hair, and it works well, but i wish it grew faster, right now ist only just past my bottom lip in front and about 3 inches from hitting my shoulders everywhere else

Jabbela, wigs may be flexible, but you have great hair. Stick with that.

As for my wig. I looked at wigs for quite some time and had it basically a few styles. Then one night when I was looking at wigs my wife popped by when I was looking and I asked her which one would look best on me. I later bought that wig. But Note!! Just because one's wife says that is the wig that would look good on you, does not mean you just asked if it was ok to get it. That is a separate question to them. Yes I learned that one the hard way.

Lisa, I too like the longer hair and the suit looks great too!!!! Might have to tone it down a bit for Fielden's however
Jabbela I love your hair too! Hope you have a hairdresser that works with you!
Last night SL and I did the wig thing as I have collected quite a few and some I have never had on - "buy one get one free" a couple of times on the web. Anyway, I found a short brunette that I had not worked with before and with SL's help - well, it is now my favorite!! We even found one that SL will wear, brunette with reddish highlights and gently wavy, she looks really nice in it!!!!
We are in the beginning throws of planning our "Committment Ceremony" in Vegas in April and I have been looking for a gown to wear, too!
Love,
