Dangerous Lipsticks

Post by Georgia(SO) »

I received the following info in an email today and thought I'd pass it on. I don't know anything about it - could be an e-hoax, but I thought it was worth considering. (I can't remember the name of the website that debunks e-hoaxes - maybe one of ya'll know it...)

Something to consider next time you go shopping for lipstick......

Recently a lipstick brand called "Red Earth" decreased their prices from $67 to $9.90. It contained lead.

This fear-mongering email is long on misinformation and short on verified facts. Laboratory tests have shown that some name-brand lipsticks sold in the U.S. do contain trace amounts of lead from the dyes used in their manufacture, but the lead content of these coloring agents is strictly controlled by the Food & Drug Administration to meet currently accepted safety standards and pose no serious health threat, according to a statement from the American Cancer Society.

As usual because "it has lead in it" is chemicly true, but meaningless.
Most of the lipsticks listed have a small amount of zinc or a zinc oxide as a sunblock ingredient. Zinc, even the zinc thats a mineral in multi vitamins, can have
.004% (4/1000s of 1 percent)lead and be concidered chemicly pure.
If you were to burn/vaporize that metal (even with the .004% lead content)
it would meet the EPA air quality safe standards for lead. Most of the lead hysteria is a carry over from lead based paint which contained "Sugar of lead", this is lead oxide treated with an acid. It is VERY toxic and VERY sweet tasting, absorbs into the body quickly and binds with tissue causing a cumuative buildup.

Just a thought, for those of you who have not come out to you SO, I think you would have a better chance of getting slapped silly by you SO for traces of Lipstick, and not on your collar. But traces left by the long lasting lipsticks.
Just a thought. [-o<
